Aleksandr Romannikov, Academic Advisor for plasma technologies and controlled nuclear fusion at TRINITI (part of Rosatom's Science Division, JSC "Science and Innovations"), participated in the 28th meeting of Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) of ITER International Council. A video conference was held in the first half of May with the participation of representatives of the seven parties involved in the joint implementation of ITER Project: European Union, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States.
SSC RF TRINITI has been involved in the ITER project for many years, holding tests of materials of the first tokamak wall components. It is the performance of the first wall that can be critical in the successful achievement of the goals of the entire project. The immense contribution of Russian scientists is another step to get industrial-scale nuclear fusion energy," Aleksandr Romannikov noted.
For three days, fusion experts from around the world reviewed and discussed reports by representatives of participating countries on the technical state of the work. The Russian party took an active and fruitful part in the discussions. As a result of three-days meeting, STAC members drafted a report and made a number of recommendations to the Council.
For reference:
ITER, International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor – the world's first international test fusion reactor being built by the international community in Provence, France, near Marseilles. The goal of the Project is to demonstrate the science and technology feasibility of industrial-scale application of fusion energy, and to refine the processes required for this.
Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) is an advisory body to the Council of ITER International Science and Technology Project. STAC consists of representatives from all parties to the ITER project - a combined European team, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States. Main functions of the committee include advising on science and technology aspects of the project, setting critical science and technology tasks for ITER, holding expert hearings, and drafting reports on decisions taken by ITER.
